In April, the community came together in an extraordinary show of generosity through a donation drive led by Kon from Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, in support of Emerge and children impacted by family violence.

Driven by compassion and a genuine commitment to supporting vulnerable children, Kon personally initiated and coordinated the campaign, bringing together community members, volunteers and local organisations across Melbourne and regional Victoria.

The initiative collected new books, toys and art materials for children aged 3–12 who are supported through Emerge’s refuge and therapeutic programs — including our Back on Track early intervention program.

Supporting healing through play and creativity

Children who experience family violence often leave home with very few belongings, carrying the impacts of trauma, disruption and uncertainty.

At Emerge, we know that healing is not only about safety — it’s also about connection, expression and the opportunity to simply be a child.

Donations of books, toys and creative materials help us provide therapeutic supports that speak the language of children: art, play and imagination.

These resources are used across our refuge and therapeutic programs to help children:

  • Feel safe and supported
  • Express emotions and experiences
  • Build confidence and connection
  • Re-engage with learning and social development

As highlighted throughout the campaign, these donations help ensure children are met where they are and supported to grow and play.

A community-wide effort

One of the most inspiring parts of the fundraiser was the incredible network of volunteer-led community drop-off locations established across Melbourne and regional Victoria.

Donation points included:

Each location generously gave their time, space and support to help make the campaign possible.

Thank you

We are deeply grateful to Kon, the ASRC community, and every individual, volunteer, business and community organisation who contributed to this initiative.

From those who donated items, to the volunteers coordinating collections and drop-off points — every act of kindness helped create moments of comfort, joy and healing for children rebuilding their lives after violence.

This fundraiser was a powerful reminder that community care matters.

And together, we can continue creating spaces where children feel safe, supported and able to heal.
